Walter Reed earns recognition from the American College of Surgeons
Walter Reed National Military Medical Center has once again been recognized as a meritoriously performing hospital by the American College of Surgeons (ACS). Each year, the ACS assesses the performance of hospitals participating in its National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (NSQIP) and identifies those facilities that have achieved exemplary composite scores across a combination of eight clinical outcomes.
“We’re honored to receive this recognition from the American College of Surgeons,” said U.S. Air Force Lt. Col. (Dr.) Robert Krell, surgical quality officer in Walter Reed’s surgical oncology unit. “It validates the time and efforts all our staff, nurses, techs, facilities personnel, trainees and surgeons devote to getting our patients safely to and through their surgical care. It also motivates us to further elevate the care we provide as surgical quality leaders in the Military Health System.”
There are two sets of criteria that result in two different recognitions: the All Cases (AC) Meritorious List and the High Risk (HR) Meritorious List. Each list relies on risk-adjusted odds ratios for mortality and seven separate morbidity complications, such as cardiac events, pneumonia, renal failure, urinary tract infections, unplanned intubations, ventilator dependence for more than 48 hours and surgical site infections. NSQIP-participating hospitals must track the outcomes of surgical procedures, both inpatient and outpatient, which are then analyzed by the ACS to calculate the scores for the AC and HR categories. The results inform patient safety initiatives and impact surgical care quality within each participating hospital, and hospitals that earn the recognition are designated as ACS Surgical Quality Partners.
Walter Reed’s commitment to surgical excellence spans multiple years, having previously received meritorious recognition in 2018 and 2025 for both the All Cases and High Risk lists and in 2019 and 2023 for the All Cases category. Earning recognition for both lists is a significant distinction, as participating hospitals are measured against nearly 600 other eligible hospitals. In fact, out of the 77 hospitals that were recognized, Walter Reed was one of only 42 hospitals this year to once again be recognized on both lists. By consistently exceeding the rigorous clinical metrics the ACS uses to determine its NSQIP scores, Walter Reed has repeatedly demonstrated its commitment to delivering Presidential healthcare and solidified its place in the top 10 percent of surgical programs internationally.
